Type 1 Diabetes
On February 23, 2026 Xavier's life forever changed. He was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. He had been showing classic signs of Diabetes for a couple of weeks, but we just couldn't believe that was what the problem really was. We just kept thinking he would start to feel better any day. Eventually, we gave in and took him to the doctors. I really thought he had mono. We were all stunned to discover he had developed Type 1 Diabetes. We don't know what triggered the autoimmune response for him, but we do know he was sick with something about a month before his diagnoses and then he just never fully recovered from it.
These amazing young men with Xavier in the picture above came to visit him while he was in the hospital for 3 days recovering from his acidkeytacidosis and getting his diabetes management training. These guys are amazing friends! What great friends Xavier has. It meant the world to him to have them come for a few hours. I hope they felt in their hearts how important they are and what this did for Xavier.
We are so thankful for the life saving medicine Insulin. We are so thankful for all the doctors, nurses, and diabetes educators who have helped us get started on this lifelong journey and help Xavier successfully manage his Diabetes. I am continually overcome with how kind and supportive and patient everyone has been with us and our millions of questions. This is scarry a scarry thing, but Dustin, Xavier, and I have all felt a peace beyond understanding through this experience. I know that is the Savior blessing us with that peace. Dustin and I have both felt the Holy Ghost whisper to our hearts that of anybody we know Xavier is the most capable of dealing with this disability and doing so with power and purpose. I firmly believe that God does not give us challenges, but He does give us the power to turn those challenged for our good and I know He will turn this to Xavier's good. I feel it is an opportunity for Xavier to bless lives in ways we don't yet understand. The journey is still young and it will last Xavier's lifetime. But I find great peace in knowing the Lord is with us through it all. I am grateful for modern medicine that can give Xavier a long life and help him manage his Diabetes without too much change to his life so far. I feel so incredibly blessed through this.
