Utah Native Pollinator Garden

We won a grant from the Utah Department of Agriculture as part of the Utah Pollinators Program.  We are taking out part of the grass in our front yard and installing native Utah plants (curtesy of the program) that will support and sustain our local native pollinators! 

We took out 400-ish square feet of grass from the front yard, side yard, and parking strip.  We then tilled the old soil and hauled in 8 cubic yards of top soil to amend and shape the new landscape.  Then the plants arrived! We were awarded 90 native pollinator plants.  They are very teeny-tiny plants, so it's hard to see them nestled into the 8 cubic yards of mulch we put on top to help with water retention, weed suppressant, and root cooling.

We received so many fun penstemons, asters, and various grasses.  We also got milkweed (those are contained in the pots) and some big bushes like rock roses and golden currents.  We ended up with 30 different varieties.  It was quite the puzzle process to figure out where everything should go and how to make it look pretty.  

All of the plants are native to our region of Utah and can be found in the wild.  I think most of the seeds for propagation were gathered from wild plants.

This turned into quite the family project.  Everyone pitched in and helped to make this little patch of earth more beautiful and to celebrate the native plants and pollinators that call Utah home too.  


Everything is planted, and now we water and wait, and then water and wait some more.

It's Christmas Time

It's the Christmas season and we did a few things to celebrate the Christmas cheer this year.  Diana and I and her friend Everett and his fun mom got a personal tour of the Ogden Christmas Village by none other than Mrs Clause herself!  We even got a train ride too!  I think it was the highlight of the season for Diana.  Then we took the entire family to Luminaria at Thanksgiving Point to enjoy the spectacular lights throughout the gardens.  As always, it was awe-inspiring!  We attended the annual Phillips Family Christmas Party.  Santa made an appearance and handed out gifts to all of the kids.  Diana was terrified of him and quickly hid behind my chair when the jolly old elf came into the room.  But, she quickly found her inner bravery and ran up to his lap when he produced a prettily wrapped present and called Diana's name.  She was not going to miss out on her very own gift.  It was so funny and so cute! This Guy is Amazing

Loyd closed out his High School experience as #4 in his class ranking!  Go Loyd!  I couldn't be more proud of him!  He has worked so hard the past 4 years.  He's held down a demanding parttime job at Ridley's Grocery store, taken on challenging college and AP classes, attending the DTC to learn more about architecture and engineering, taken time to build lasting memories with his siblings, and been the best friend ever.  And he's become a spiritual powerhouse at the same time, taking time to attend Seminary, study his scriptures and his Patriarchal Blessing daily, and never forgets to open his heart up in prayer to Heavenly Father.  This guy is amazing!  He was asked to honor an important teacher to him at the first ever Morgan High School Honors Banquet.  The spirit of gratitude and love that was there was the best feeling.  I'm so proud of Loyd and his recognition of Mrs. Heidi Miller for her love and efforts to help grow these students int...
