Art, Life Skills, and Skating!

Loyd has been doing some fun art lately.  He works very hard coloring and drawing in his room after we tuck him in for the night.  Often I have to turn his light back off and remind him to go to sleep so he isn't too tired for school the next day.  It's such fun to see him excited about and exploring his new skills he is learning.  He is such a bright, inquisitive boy.  He really is a lot of fun, even if I have to nag him a bit.  ;)
"Cave" by Loyd Cornelius (age 6)
The library had a program for elementary aged kids about cave painting.  The kids learned a bit about early human cave paintings and why they are important.  Then the kids were given an opportunity to make their own cave paintings.  Loyd made this spectacular cave painting of a...Cave!  I love the literalness of his subject.  :D
Loyd also loves to draw portraits of people he knows and loves.  Here are a few recent drawings he has done of his family.  Can you tell that almost all the grownups in his family wear glasses?  :)

Maeve is working very hard on mastering the life skill of blowing your nose.  She loves to get the tissues out, hold them up to her nose and then blow a really loud, wet raspberry that sounds like a noisy nose blow.  It's really funny.  She gets the sound and the actions perfectly.  Now if we could just teach her to blow out of her nose when she does it, then she will have the process down pat.

This weekend the kids and I went to an open house at the local ice rink. We had a lot of fun.  There was a little 30 minute figure skating show we could watch and then the kids got to take a 30 min free ice skating lesson.  Rebekah and Xavier braved the ice and had a lot of fun.  There was a lot of sliding and falling, but they were very good humored about it and kept on trying.  Rebekah eventually figured out how to stand up all by herself without falling.  Xavier learned that ice is cold on your pants.  Loyd didn't feel up to the challenge and opted to check out the little video games instead of wobble out onto the ice.  It was a fun afternoon of trying new things and seeing ice nicely contained inside.  How lucky we are to live by so many wonderful venues where we can try and learn new things all of the time.  It's one of my favorite things about living so close to such a large city.  Yea for trying new things!  :)
