Welcome Baby John!

 John Axle Cornelius

In November we were told by the ultrasound technician that you were a girl.  So, we got busy planning for a baby girl.  Pink clothes and blankets were purchased, a Christmas princess stocking was made by Grandma Phillips, Grandma Cornelius got busy on a beautiful pink cross-stitch quilt, and a crochet lace blessing dress was carefully stitched.  Everything was ready well ahead of time for a sweet baby girl.

Early in the morning on the big birth-day in March, Dustin and I arrived at the hospital ready to deliver our sweet baby into the world.  Everything went well and according to plan until the baby arrived.  In a voice that help some confusion, the doctor announced, "We have a boy!" Surprise!

Turns out, we were all wrong.  We were expecting a beautiful baby boy the whole time!  Dustin and I were excited to meet our new son and get to know this precious little boy.  When we broke the news to the other kids they didn't believe us at first.  It took seeing the new baby in person for them to finally believe that they got a new baby brother instead of a baby sister.  I guess it's harder to take Dustin at his word than we originally thought.  ;)

News of our son's surprising arrival quickly spread throughout the hospital and he became quite the celebrity as the unexpected son with no name on the maternity floor.

As a family we all spent three days thinking up names for the new baby before we all finally agreed that he was most definitely our very own John Axle.

He was named John Axle for three main reasons.
#1: John is a family name.  One of Grandma Phillips' amazing brothers was John Heber (J.H.) He was greatly loved, just as our little one is.

#2: John Doe is what you call a man whose name is unknown, and for three days in the hospital we had no idea what we were suppose to name you!

#3: John was the Beloved Apostle of our Savior Jesus Christ.  We want or little boy to always remember that he is a beloved part of our eternal family and we hope he will always follow in the footsteps of that great disciple of Jesus, going about always doing good.

The name Axle is a tie to family roots that go back deeper in time on both sides of the family, and because it is one very cool name.  Who knew we had so many Axles on both sides of the family.  It must have been destiny.

John has been an exciting and wonderful spot in our lives.  We love and cherish this little boy.  From the moment we saw him we felt, of course we needed him in our lives.  We're looking forward to an eternity of getting to know our little surprise!

Getting to know the newest little brother

Finally pulling our act together & getting out the little boy things.

The beautiful crochet, white afghan was made by my Grandma Zoie Young in 1992.  It has remained hidden in my mother's ceder chest, long forgotten.  But, when word arrived that Granddaughter #19 turned out to be Grandson #19 my mom felt prompted to look in her ceder chest and found this beautiful blanket waiting for John.  It came complete with a county fair blue ribbon, and a handwritten note from Grandma Zoie that this beautiful blanket was for me.  Something prompted Grandma to make this beautiful blanket over 20 years before our John even needed it.  Heaven has truly watched over us, providing for us.

Another challenge our surprise son presented was a lack of baby boy clothing.  When I was told to expect a girl I promptly gave away all the baby boy clothes in the house except for five or six favorite outfits.  So, our sweet son found he was the proud owner of a wardrobe heavy on pink and lace.  Thanks to another small miracle John does not have to go through early life in dresses, but in dinosaur rompers and monster PJs.

Ruby, a sweet sister from church, had recently been offered two boxes of nearly brand new Newborn sized baby boy clothes from one of her neighbors.  Not knowing what she was going to do with all those clothes (she only knew of our little girl coming, not any baby boys) she took the gift and promised to keep her ears open for someone who might need them.  Not one week later she heard about our surprise and offered the clothes to Dustin at Church on Sunday.  So, thanks to her inspiration and the generosity of her neighbors, John only had to think of pink for two days before be became the best dressed little boy on the block.

It's always time to love on this sweet baby boy!
