First Week of School
School started this week, and boy was it ever an adventurous first week back to class. Rebekah is now in the 3rd grade and Loyd is a very grown-up 1st grader.
We found out our teachers, practiced walking to our classes, and packed our backpacks last Friday. We were ready to go on Monday morning. The first day went well and without incident.
The second day was equally uneventful. Wednesday we found out the school district was transferring Loyd's teacher to another school that had more 1st graders than originally anticipated and Loyd was being moved into another class for the year.
Thursday was like reliving all of the anticipation and anxiety of the first day of school all over again as I dropped Loyd off in his new class, found his new desk, and met his new teacher. All went well and Xavier, Maeve and I headed home in the torrential rain (which only started as soon as we left the school to go home) to finish breakfast, clean the house a bit, and enjoy another nice day. As soon as breakfast was done a phone call came in from the elementary school informing parents that the heavy rain storm had somehow caused a false fire alarm to go off. The school had evacuated and the students had to stand in the drenching rain until the fire marshal investigated the fire alarm and gave the all clear. We were asked to bring a dry change of clothes over for very wet kids. Hurriedly, Xavier, Maeve and I climbed back into the van with bags of dry clothes in hand and ran back over to the school to relieve Loyd and Rebekah. The kids changed into their new dry clothes and enjoyed the rest of the day. They sure had a great story to discuss with their friends on the playground and to share when they came home that night.
On Friday the power went out during classes causing a bit of commotion, but the students and teachers soldiered on until power was restored.
So, there you have it, for the first week of school we had one teacher transfer, one unexpected fire drill, one morning standing in the pouring rain, and one afternoon in the dark. It's shaping up to be an exciting school year around here. :)
I guess it was just one of those kinds of weeks. :)
